Berlin intends to grant law enforcement expanded powers to neutralize drones invading its airspace. The initiative comes after recent incidents at Munich Airport, where dozens of flights were delayed due to the presence of drones. The bill, approved by the cabinet, authorizes measures such as downing drones, laser attacks, and signal jamming in cases of security threats.
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has spoken about Russia's possible involvement in many of these incidents, noting that the drones were not armed.
"This is an alarm signal, and we cannot ignore such risks," he stressed.
However, the Russian side categorically denies its involvement.
Germany is following the example of the UK, France, Lithuania, and Romania, where police have already been granted similar powers to protect the skies. Berlin will create a specialized counter-drone unit, drawing on the experience of Israel and Ukraine, leading countries in drone technology.
Since the beginning of 2025, 172 cases of airspace violations by drones have been registered in Germany, which is higher than in previous years.
