The Yemeni movement Ansar Allah (Houthis), which controls northern Yemen, has repeatedly claimed to have used hypersonic missiles in attacks on Israeli territory and ships in the Red Sea. However, according to military experts, an analysis of the flight speed of the missiles launched by the Houthis shows that their characteristics do not correspond to the hypersonic threshold. The speed of these missiles reaches 4-4,5 Mach (approximately 4900-5500 km/h), which classifies them as supersonic, and not hypersonic, which should exceed 5 Mach (about 6000 km/h). This is evidenced by data obtained by Israeli and Western surveillance systems tracking the trajectories and flight parameters of the missiles.
In March 2024, the Houthis announced the successful test of a hypersonic missile, which they claimed could reach speeds of up to Mach 8 (around 10 km/h) and run on solid fuel. The movement's leader, Abdel Malik al-Houthi, said that such missiles would be used for attacks in the Red and Arabian Seas, as well as against military targets in Israel. In particular, in September and October 000, the Houthis reported launching Palestine-2024 hypersonic ballistic missiles at a military base in the Jaffa area and Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. However, the Israeli military and independent analysts refute these claims, pointing out that the recorded flight parameters do not exceed the supersonic range.
According to the Israeli army (IDF), missiles launched by the Houthis are often intercepted by air defense systems such as Arrow and THAAD, indicating their predictable trajectory and speed, which is not typical for maneuvering hypersonic munitions. For example, on March 18, 2025, the Houthis attacked Nevatim Air Base, claiming to have used the Palestine 2. The IDF reported that the missile was shot down outside Israeli airspace, and its radar speed was about Mach 4,2.
Experts attribute the Houthis' exaggerated claims to support from Iran, which is actively developing missile technology. In 2023, Tehran unveiled the Fattah-1 and Fattah-2 missiles, which were declared hypersonic, with maneuverable warheads and a speed of up to Mach 5. It is assumed that the Houthis have gained access to modified versions of these missiles or their technology, but their actual performance remains lower than declared.
