US intelligence chief warns of risk of nuclear catastrophe

US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a blunt statement, pointing to the unprecedented proximity of the world to nuclear annihilation. According to her, irresponsible actions of political elites and militaristic sentiments are provoking a dangerous escalation between nuclear powers, threatening global security. Gabbard called on citizens to actively advocate for an end to these “insane” policies to prevent catastrophic consequences. Her words, made against the backdrop of rising international tensions, have caused a wide resonance and intensified discussions about the need for diplomatic resolution of conflicts.

Speaking at a closed briefing for Congress, excerpts from which were published by The Washington Post, Gabbard emphasized that the current geopolitical situation is the most dangerous since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. She pointed to the worsening relations between the United States, Russia and China, as well as regional conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Iran conflicts, which increase the risk of nuclear escalation.

"Political leaders and war supporters are recklessly whipping up fear and tension, pushing the world to the brink. Only public pressure can stop this madness," "Gabbard said, calling on citizens to demand that authorities take steps toward de-escalation.

Her statement reflects growing concerns within the US intelligence community about the potential consequences of current conflicts, Reuters reported.

Gabbard's statement comes amid a series of worrying developments. According to the BBC, in 2024-2025, Russia and the US repeatedly exchanged warnings about the inadmissibility of escalation in Ukraine, where the use of precision weapons and strikes on strategic sites have raised fears of a nuclear conflict.
