Head of Gagauzia detained at Chisinau airport

On the evening of March 25, 2025, the head of the Gagauz Autonomy of Moldova, Eugenia Gutsul, was taken to the National Anti-Corruption Center (NAC) in Chisinau after being detained at the capital's airport. According to sources, she was brought to the agency's building through the service entrance, avoiding the main façade, where her supporters had already begun to gather. The operation was accompanied by increased security measures: additional law enforcement forces were deployed to the NAC building, and several police cars with reinforced crews were on duty in the adjacent territory. Among those gathered at the center were deputies of the opposition bloc "Victory", as well as representatives of other parties opposing the policies of the central authorities, which indicates the growing political tension around this incident.

Gutsul's detention occurred when she was planning to fly to Istanbul to participate in the International Journalism Congress, as well as to discuss issues important for the autonomy. According to the NAC, she was detained for 72 hours as part of a criminal investigation into the violation of the procedure for managing election funds and possible illegal financing during the elections of the head of Gagauzia in 2023. Officially, the department has limited itself to a short statement, promising to provide details later. However, it is already known that earlier that day, anti-corruption agencies conducted searches related to the activities of the former treasurer of Gutsul's election campaign, which probably became the reason for her detention.

The events surrounding the head of Gagauzia are rapidly gaining public and political resonance. A crowd of Hutsul's supporters has gathered outside the NAC building, demanding her immediate release. Among them are prominent opposition figures, including the leader of the Pobeda bloc, Ilan Shor, who called the authorities' actions "political reprisals." The tension is underscored by the presence of reinforced police patrols, which, according to analysts, may be due to the authorities' fears of possible protests. Gagauzia, traditionally oriented toward rapprochement with Russia, has long been in confrontation with the central leadership of Moldova, headed by President Maia Sandu, who advocates European integration.
