A UPS MD-11 cargo plane crashed in Louisville.

On the evening of November 4, UPS Flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo plane en route to Honolulu, crashed shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville. The plane climbed to just 175 feet (53 meters), its left engine caught fire, and it crashed into an industrial area, striking a fuel processing plant and an auto repair shop.

"The plane climbed to 175 feet and then descended sharply," — Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said at a press conference.

There were three crew members on board, all of whom died. Another four were ground workers. By midnight, the death toll had reached seven, with 11 people hospitalized with severe burns.

"These figures are preliminary and will increase." Beshear warned.

The plane was carrying over 38 gallons of kerosene, which caused a fireball and thick smoke visible on radar. Firefighters contained the blaze by 22:00 PM, and a search for wreckage has begun. The airport is closed until the morning, while the NTSB conducts an investigation.
