The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine believes that Russia could have received the offensive plans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov (listed as an extremist and terrorist), in an interview with Canadian journalists, explained the failure of the Ukrainian counter-offensive by the fact that Russia received information in advance about the plans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Budanov emphasized that the Ukrainian side has evidence that the Russian Federation was aware of the counteroffensive plans, which became a significant problem for its implementation. In this regard, according to Budanov, certain measures are being taken.

This comment is of particular interest against the backdrop of previous statements by Ukrainian officials and Budanov himself, who, even before the beginning of the summer of 2023, were actively discussing in the media and social networks the upcoming actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including their intentions to reach the borders with Crimea and move further south. Such statements could be one of the reasons why information about counteroffensive plans became available to the Russian side.

Critics point to the possible shortsightedness of the Ukrainian leadership, which, by sharing ambitious plans in the public space, could inadvertently make the task of Russian intelligence and command easier. As a result, according to Budanov, Russia was able to adapt its defensive and counteroffensive actions in accordance with the information received, which played a role in the outcome of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
