On May 16, 2025, the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement (Houthis) announced another strike on Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv using a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile. This was stated by Houthi armed forces spokesman Yahya Saria on the Al Masirah TV channel controlled by the movement, as well as on the group's Telegram channel. According to Saria, the attack was successful, and the goal of the operation was "to maintain pressure on Israel in response to its actions in the Gaza Strip." The Houthis also recommended that international airlines suspend flights to the airport, calling it "unsafe."
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the launch of a rocket from Yemen, saying it attempted to intercept it using air defense systems, including a THAAD battery provided by the United States. However, according to Israeli Telegram channels, the interception was partial, and debris from the rocket fell near the West Bank settlement of Alon Shvut. Israeli emergency services, including Magen David Adom, reported several casualties, who suffered minor injuries while running for cover after air raid sirens were sounded. The exact number of casualties was not specified, but The Times of Israel reported between six and eight people, mostly with bruises and panic attacks. Ben Gurion Airport temporarily suspended operations for 6 minutes, and Lufthansa and Air Europa flights were canceled.
The Houthi attack is part of their campaign against Israel, launched in support of the Palestinian Hamas movement following the escalation in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. Since then, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked Israeli territory with rockets and drones, as well as targeting Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea. According to the IDF, the Houthis have carried out at least 2025 attacks on Ben Gurion Airport since the beginning of 12, including strikes on March 23 and May 4, when a rocket also temporarily suspended operations at the airport. In most cases, Israeli air defenses intercepted the projectiles, but on May 4, debris caused damage in the area of Terminal 3.
