Yemen's Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement has announced an attack on two US destroyers and three US Navy supply ships in the Gulf of Aden, Houthi spokesman Yahya Saria told the rebel-owned Al Masirah TV channel. He said the attack was carried out using missiles and drones and achieved its goals.
Saria noted that the strike was the second operation against American ships in the last ten days. He also stressed that this action was a response to Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, saying that the Houthis will continue to obstruct shipping associated with the Jewish state in the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the Israeli military operation ends.
The conflict in the region continues to escalate. Since November last year, the Houthis have attacked dozens of civilian vessels, mainly in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. These actions threaten the security of international trade and maritime navigation.
In response to the attacks, Ansar Allah faced a strong international response. The United States announced the formation of a coalition to ensure freedom of navigation and protect ships. The operation was called Operation Prosperity Guardian. The US forces were joined by the British military, and the coalition began striking Houthi positions in Yemen.
In 2024, Yemen's Houthi rebels stepped up attacks on military and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. Since early October, the Houthis have been attacking ships using attack drones and missiles. On November 12, the Houthis reported a cruise missile strike on the US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, but US officials have not confirmed the reports. In late November, the Houthis reported attacks on three US supply ships after they left the port of Djibouti.
The Houthis (officially Ansar Allah Movement) are a Shia rebel group operating in Yemen. They represent a Zaidi sect of Shia Islam centered in northwestern Yemen. The Houthis were founded in the 1990s by Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi as a politico-religious movement and later became an armed force. The Houthis' primary goals include fighting corruption, increasing Shia influence in Yemen, and resisting foreign interference, particularly from Saudi Arabia and the United States.
