In a post on the social media platform X, American billionaire Elon Musk sharply criticized the structure of the European Union, proposing its complete abolition. He believes this would allow national governments to more effectively reflect the interests of their citizens.
"The EU needs to be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent their people," — Musk wrote.
He also noted that European bureaucracy is "slowly strangling Europe to death." In his post, the businessman questioned the wisdom of US support for the EU, asking what exactly Washington is protecting Brussels from.
Musk's statement comes amid the recent €120 million fine imposed by the European Commission on his platform X for violating the Digital Services Act. This regulation, which comes into force in August 2023, requires online platforms to combat disinformation, racism, and illegal trading, as well as to be algorithmically transparent.
In response to Musk's comments, X users proposed a similar approach for the United States—dividing the country into sovereign states to eliminate federal bureaucracy.
There has been no official reaction from Brussels to Musk's criticism yet.
