The Indian Air Force (IAF) is evaluating the option of acquiring 63 Su-57 fifth-generation multirole fighters from Russia under the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program, equivalent to three squadrons. This decision is aimed at addressing a growing shortage of combat aircraft due to wear and tear and recent deployments.
According to foreign sources, Moscow is proposing to integrate the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile, which has a range of up to 2000 km and a speed of up to Mach 10, into the aircraft. This capability will allow for long-range strikes against targets in high-risk areas without the direct involvement of pilots.
The procurement plan calls for the import of an initial batch of 36-40 aircraft by 2028, with the remainder to be produced locally by 2032. The cost of each aircraft is estimated at $80-100 million, with the total deal valued at $5-6 billion. Negotiations are ongoing alongside those of competitors like the Rafale, but interest in the Su-57 has increased following its demonstration at Aero India 2025.
