Iran blames US for helicopter crash and death of president

Iran has blamed the United States for the helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. This was stated by former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. According to him, US actions aimed at banning the sale of aircraft and spare parts to Iran, despite the decision of the International Court, played a key role in the tragedy.

"The United States is responsible for the tragedy associated with the crash of the president's helicopter. They banned the sale of aircraft and spare parts to Iran, despite the decision of the International Court of Justice", Zarif said.

The helicopter crash, carrying Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Governor of East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati and Friday Imam of Tabriz Mohammad Ali Ale Hashem, occurred near the village of Uzi in the forests of Arsbaran. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, all passengers and crew of the helicopter died on the spot.

A preliminary investigation showed that the helicopter fell at an altitude of 2,5 thousand meters and caught fire. The wreckage was discovered by rescuers the day after the disaster. Iranian Vice President Mansouri confirmed the death of the president and those accompanying him. Five days of mourning have been declared in Iran, and the funeral ceremony will take place on May 21 in Tabriz.
