Iran Mistakenly Strikes Syria Instead of Israel

On June 15, 2025, Iran attempted to launch a missile strike on northern Israel, but several of the missiles mistakenly hit Syrian territory before reaching the Israeli border, according to Israeli and Syrian sources, the Clash Report Telegram channel and the Syrian state news agency SANA reported. The incident occurred as part of the ongoing standoff between Tehran and Tel Aviv, which began after Israeli attacks on Iranian military facilities on June 13. Iran's mistake has sparked a new wave of tension in the region, especially amid the already difficult situation in Syria, where Iranian-backed groups are active.

According to SANA, the missiles, believed to be Iranian Fateh-110s, fell near the town of al-Sanamain, causing destruction in the countryside. Syrian authorities reported two civilians killed and five wounded, as well as damage to several buildings. The Syrian Defense Ministry condemned the incident as a “violation of sovereignty,” although it stopped short of directly accusing Iran. The Israeli army (IDF) confirmed that air defense systems detected the missiles, but none entered Israeli airspace.

The incident comes amid an escalating conflict that began with Israeli strikes on nuclear facilities in Fordow and military bases in Hamadan. Iran responded with a series of attacks, including missile strikes on Israeli cities such as Haifa, where seven people were killed, according to Reuters. The mistaken strike on Syria highlights the challenges of coordinating Iranian operations, especially as their air defenses are weakened by the Israeli attacks. According to The Times of Israel, Syria, which lost 86% of its air defenses to Israeli operations in December 2024, was unable to intercept the missiles, adding to the chaos.
