F-14A Tomcat interceptors patrol the skies over western Iran, armed with long-range AIM-54B Phoenix air-to-air missiles capable of reaching a maximum speed of 5250 km/h and hitting targets at a distance of up to 135 kilometers. Along with these missiles, Iranian analogues, the Fakour-90, are also installed on board, which significantly expands the capabilities of the Iranian Air Force in protecting the country's airspace.
According to technical specifications, the F-14A is equipped with multifunctional onboard radar systems AN/AWG-9, which allow detection of targets with an effective scattering area (ESA) of only 0,07 square meters - which is approximately the size of such high-precision munitions as the Delilah-AL missiles. These systems provide detection of low-observable objects at a distance of up to 70 kilometers, which makes them very effective in conditions of possible air confrontation.
The activity of Iranian interceptors has increased especially against the backdrop of growing tensions in the region associated with threats of military conflict with Israel.
