Iran Admits It Bought Pagers That Exploded From Hezbollah

In a recent interview on Iranian state television, Masoud Asadollahi, former deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, revealed details of the massive pager explosions that occurred in Lebanon. According to him, a batch of these devices was purchased by an Iranian company for Hezbollah, but the delivered pagers were booby-trapped and exploded almost simultaneously in different locations in Lebanon.

Asadollahi said Hezbollah had long needed to upgrade its outdated communications devices and ordered about 4000 new pagers from an Iranian company through intermediaries. Since the organization could not buy such devices directly, the order was placed through a third company in Iran. That company, in turn, contacted a well-known manufacturer, allegedly a Taiwanese company, and purchased 5000 pagers.

However, according to Asadollahi, the problem was that the devices were not properly checked before being handed over to Hezbollah. He noted that no one could have guessed that the pagers could be booby-trapped. According to him, although a minimal check could have at least revealed the presence of listening devices, encryption codes, or other dangerous elements, these pagers were handed over without any additional checks.
