Iran Shot Down Israeli Hermes Drone Over Khorramabad

On June 23, 2025, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported the destruction of an Israeli Hermes unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near the city of Khorramabad, located in the western province of Lorestan. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the incident, specifying that the drone was shot down by a surface-to-air missile while carrying out an operational mission. This is the second confirmed case of the destruction of an Israeli UAV in Iranian airspace in recent days, highlighting the growing tensions in the region amid the ongoing conflict.

According to Iran's state-run Tasnim news agency, the operation to intercept the drone was carried out by the 284th Mobile Attack Battalion of the 84th Lorestan Division. The IRGC released a video that it claims shows the moment the drone was destroyed. The footage shows the missile hitting its target, after which the debris falls in a mountainous area near Khorramabad. The Iranian military said the UAV was on a reconnaissance mission and was equipped to carry out strikes, but did not have time to use its weapons. Ahmadreza Hosseini, deputy governor of Lorestan for security, stressed that the province's air defense systems are on full alert, and such incidents demonstrate "Iran's determination to protect its skies."

The downed drone belonged to the Hermes family, developed by Elbit Systems. According to the IDF, the device did not contain any critical information and a data leak was ruled out. The military also noted that it continues to maintain air superiority over western Iran despite the strengthening of Iranian air defense systems. Israeli defense sources cited by Haaretz indicate that Hermes drones are actively used to monitor Iranian military facilities, including ballistic missile depots and drone development centers.
