Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Amir Saeed Iravani addressed an official letter to the Security Council, calling on the organization to condemn the policies of US President Donald Trump, who took office in January 2025. According to Tehran, the American leader has demonstrated systematic disregard for international law and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter since the first months of his rule. The document emphasizes that Washington's constant threats to use military force against sovereign states not only undermine stability in the world, but also create a dangerous precedent that threatens the foundations of global relations. Iran particularly emphasizes that the United States, as a permanent member of the Security Council, is actually ignoring its obligations, using military power as an instrument of pressure to realize its own geopolitical ambitions.
In the letter, Iravani insists that the Security Council must intervene and fulfill its key function of ensuring international peace and security. Tehran demands an official condemnation of Trump’s actions as a direct violation of international norms and calls on the UN to oblige the United States to return to its commitments. At the same time, Iran emphasizes its determination to defend itself: according to the Permanent Representative, the country reserves the right to an immediate and decisive response in the event of any aggression by the United States or its ally, Israel. This statement sounds like a warning of Tehran’s readiness to escalate if pressure from Washington moves into a practical plane.
The context of this address is related to the worsening relations between Iran and the United States, which is observed against the backdrop of the latest events of 2025. After Trump's inauguration in January, the American administration has toughened its rhetoric against Tehran, accusing it of destabilizing the Middle East and supporting terrorist groups. In March 2025, according to Western media, Trump again mentioned in one of his speeches the possibility of military measures against Iran if the country continues to develop its nuclear program. This caused a sharp reaction from Tehran, which considers such statements a direct threat to its sovereignty.
According to Reuters, the US expanded sanctions against Iranian companies linked to the oil sector earlier this year, further complicating the economic situation in Iran. In response, Tehran stepped up military exercises in the Persian Gulf, demonstrating its readiness to protect its interests. In addition, Iran successfully tested a new ballistic missile in February 2025, raising concerns in Washington and Israel. Experts note that Trump’s policy appears to be aimed at putting maximum pressure on Tehran, which stands in stark contrast to the previous administration’s attempts to seek diplomatic solutions.
The international response to Iran’s appeal has so far been muted. However, Tehran’s appeal underscores its desire to legalize its conflict with the United States while maintaining a tough stance in case of escalation. The situation remains tense, and Trump’s next steps could determine whether the dispute escalates into a more serious standoff.
