Escalating tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel reached a new level when Iranian leader Ali Khamenei openly declared on Twitter that the United States and the "Zionist entity" would receive a "crushing response" for actions against the Iranian people and forces supporting Iran. Khamenei's statement also raised concerns among the American command, which responded to the threats by quickly deploying B-52H strategic missile carriers to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
The bombers are armed with AGM-86C/D cruise missiles that can carry high-explosive and penetrating warheads designed for precision strikes against hardened targets. Experts say the move is intended to demonstrate to Iran that the United States and its allies are prepared to strike back in the event of escalation.
Possible targets for a retaliatory strike include strategically important Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sites and mobile missile sites, as well as military bases from which attacks could be launched against US allies and Israel. Israel and the US could also strike Iran's fortified underground facilities, using bunker bombs to neutralize Iran's missile systems and aircraft if necessary, according to analysts.
The situation is complicated by the preparation of a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Iran and Russia. This agreement may provide for the supply of Russian Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles and MiG-31K carrier aircraft to Iran, as well as Kh-69 tactical missiles for Su-35S fighters. If the agreement is signed, Iran will receive new powerful weapons, which will significantly enhance its military capabilities and add tension in the region.
