Disappearance of Belarusian oppositionist with money: Poland launches investigation

Polish law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the disappearance of Anzhelika Melnikova, the speaker of the Coordination Council of the Belarusian opposition, who went missing in Warsaw on March 25, 2025. As the press service of the capital's police reported in response to a request from the BBC Russian Service, the department received a statement about the possible criminal use of Melnikova's personal data. The collected materials were transferred to the Warsaw district prosecutor's office for further investigation. The authorities have not yet disclosed any details, but the case raises serious questions about the safety of the oppositionists who left Belarus after the political crisis of 2020.

Melnikova, who was an active participant in the work of the Coordination Council, went offline in late March, causing concern among her colleagues. In early April, opposition leader and former diplomat Pavel Latushko said that Melnikova’s phone was registered in Belarus, but there is no confirmation that she is in the country. Some sources close to the opposition claim that Melnikova may have embezzled a significant amount of money intended to support Belarusian activists and disappeared. These accusations have not yet been officially confirmed, and the police are considering all possible versions, including kidnapping, blackmail, or voluntary withdrawal from public life.

According to Zerkalo, the investigation has been taken over by the Polish National Prosecutor's Office, which underlines the seriousness of the case. Polish media outlets such as Radio ZET report that Melnikova left Poland on February 26, flying to London, after which all traces of her stay have been lost. A source citing BYSOL co-founder Alexey Leonchik confirms that she left the British capital, but her whereabouts remain unknown. The X platform is actively discussing versions of events: some users suggest that Melnikova has become a victim of the special services, while others accuse her of embezzlement.
