RAF fighters attempt to intercept Russian Tu-142 aircraft

RAF fighter jets were scrambled to intercept two Russian aircraft flying close to UK airspace. According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the aircraft in question were Russian Tu-142s flying in international airspace, close to the country's borders.

Two Typhoon fighters were sent from RAF Lossiemouth to intercept the Russian aircraft, accompanied by a Voyager refuelling aircraft from RAF Brize Norton. The operation was carried out under NATO command and the Russian aircraft were monitored throughout their time in international airspace.

The UK Ministry of Defence's official statement stressed that "the Russian aircraft did not enter UK sovereign airspace". The interception and escort were part of standard procedures to ensure the security of the country's air borders in coordination with NATO.
