Italy has transferred €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine

On May 16, 2025, the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reported that Italy had supplied Ukraine with military aid, including weapons and ammunition, worth a total of about €3 billion. According to the newspaper, this was not specially purchased weapons, but surplus stocks that had been stored in Italian military warehouses for many years. This information supplements the statement by the Italian Foreign Ministry on May 11, according to which Rome had transferred €2,5 billion to Kyiv for military and humanitarian needs, including direct aid and contributions through European Union funds. The difference in figures is likely due to additional supplies not included in official reports or an overestimation of the value of the equipment transferred.

As Il Fatto Quotidiano specifies, the deliveries included M113 armored personnel carriers, artillery ammunition, anti-tank systems, as well as anti-aircraft guided missiles for the SAMP-T complex, capable of hitting air targets at a range of up to 120 km and an altitude of up to 20 km.

Italy previously delivered nine military aid packages in March 2025, including air defense systems, armored vehicles, and ammunition, making it one of the key European donors to Ukraine. According to Reuters, many of the weapons were transferred from old stockpiles to minimize the cost of purchasing new equipment for the Italian army.
