Of the 2700 German Strela-2 MANPADS for Ukraine, only about 500 complexes turned out to be operational

The German Strela-2 MANPADS being prepared for transfer to Ukraine turned out to be faulty.

Recently, refusing to transfer Strela-2 complexes to Ukraine, Germany found itself in the center of a high-profile scandal. As it turned out, the unmotivated refusal to continue deliveries of MANPADS for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was caused by a banal malfunction of 80% of the systems.

As it became known to the news agency Avia.pro, the reason for Germany's refusal to supply Strela-2 complexes to Ukraine was a trite revealed malfunction of the latter. Moreover, in all likelihood, this was established in the process of removing these weapons from storage.

“When unloading warehouses, the German military found that some of the complexes were damaged and had defects that did not allow them to be used safely. However, fearing a harsh reaction from the public (and these weapons are still officially used by the German army), no one has named the reasons ", according to a source familiar with the situation.

At the moment, it has been established that out of 2700 Strela-2 systems that Germany intended to transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, only about 500 units of such weapons are in good condition. This, by the way, is not surprising, since the Strela-2 complexes were developed back in the 60s of the last century, and the basic version of this MANPADS is in service with Germany.
