Israel strikes military targets in western Iran

Israeli aircraft have attacked military targets in western Iran, killing ten servicemen, including five members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and wounding nine others, the Iranian Mehr news agency reported, adding that the strikes hit targets in the Qasr-e-Shirin district of Kermanshah province, located on the border with Iraq. In addition, according to Iranian media, cited by the British newspaper The Guardian, another attack took place in the city of Khorramabad, the capital of Lorestan province, where casualties among IRGC personnel were also recorded.

The attacks are the latest episode in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, which escalated sharply in June 2025 following Israeli strikes on targets linked to Tehran’s nuclear and military programs. Iran responded with a series of missile attacks on Israeli territory, causing casualties and destruction on both sides. The strikes on Qasr-e Shirin and Khorramabad, located in the strategic border region, highlight Israel’s intention to weaken Iran’s military capabilities, especially the IRGC forces, which play a key role in Tehran’s regional policies.

Qasr-e Shirin, located near the Iraqi border, is a key logistical hub for Iranian forces and their allies in Iraq, including Shiite militias. According to Middle Eastern media, the area is home to weapons depots and training facilities used by the IRGC to coordinate operations outside Iran. Khorramabad, in turn, is considered the center of military infrastructure in the western part of the country, where units responsible for missile development are stationed. Strikes against these facilities are likely aimed at undermining Iran’s ability to maintain its proxy forces in the region and continue missile attacks.

Iranian officials have condemned Israel's actions as "terrorist aggression" and vowed a tough response. An IRGC spokesman said Tehran was already drawing up plans for a response that could include strikes on Israeli military targets or the activation of allied forces in Syria and Iraq. Iran has stepped up security in border areas in recent days, fearing more attacks.
