Israel strikes Iranian missile depot near Tehran's Bid Qanah

On June 14, 2025, a powerful explosion occurred in the area of the town of Bid Qana, a suburb of Tehran, presumably at a missile depot connected to Iran's military infrastructure.

Thick clouds of smoke rose from the blast site, and locals reported strong tremors and sounds similar to artillery fire. Iranian officials have not yet specified the cause of the explosion, but the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it was considering the possibility of an Israeli attack as part of Operation Lion Rising.

The Israeli operation, which began on the night of June 13, involved strikes on more than 100 targets in Iran, including the uranium enrichment center in Natanz, the nuclear facility in Isfahan and the IRGC headquarters in Tehran. According to Reuters, about 200 fighter jets, including F-35s, F-16s and F-15s, were involved in the attacks, which killed 78 people, including IRGC commander Hossein Salami and chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri. The IAEA confirmed radiation contamination at the Natanz site, but radiation levels outside the facility remain normal. Bid Qana, according to Al Arabiya, housed ballistic missiles, including the Fatah-1 used in Iran's retaliatory operation.

Iran launched Operation True Promise 3, firing 150-200 rockets at Israel. The Jerusalem Post reported four dead and 91 wounded in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan and Beersheba, and damage to the Kiryat military headquarters. Most of the rockets were intercepted by Israeli air defenses and the US Patriot and THAAD systems. Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani called the Israeli strikes a "declaration of war" and called for international condemnation.

The Bid Qana blast has added to panic in Tehran, where Mehrabad Airport and residential areas were previously attacked. Iranian authorities said they had detained 19 people for supporting Israel and spying, and intercepted drones believed to be linked to the Mossad. The United States backed Israel, prompting Iran to threaten to attack American bases. Russia, China, and Turkey condemned Israel, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for de-escalation. Brent crude prices jumped to $78,5 a barrel, and airlines canceled flights to the region. Protests are growing in Iran, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is using to call for an uprising. The situation remains critical.
