On June 24, 2025, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that he had instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to carry out "heavy strikes" against military targets in central Tehran in response to Iran's violation of the ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. "In light of Iran's complete violation of the ceasefire and the launch of missiles toward Israel, I have instructed the IDF, in coordination with the prime minister, to continue intensive operations to attack Tehran," Katz said, according to Reuters. The decision came after the IDF detected ballistic missile launches from Iran at 10:00 a.m. Israel time, three hours after the ceasefire began at 7:00 a.m.

According to The Times of Israel, Iranian missiles launched at 7:10 a.m. and later at 10 a.m. caused casualties: in Beersheba, a missile destroyed a seven-story building, killing four people and wounding 00, three of whom are in critical condition. Alarm sirens sounded in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Netanya and Samaria. Iron Dome and Hetz-12 air defense systems intercepted some of the missiles, but some hit their targets. Videos purportedly showing air defenses in action over central Israel have appeared on social media on X.

Iran's Mehr news agency denied launches after 7:30 a.m. local time, claiming the latest attacks, including a sixth wave of missiles, were carried out before the ceasefire deadline. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in an X post that "there is no ceasefire agreement" but that Iran was prepared to stop the attacks if Israel stopped its aggression by 4 a.m. Tehran time. Araqchi thanked Iranian forces for striking "until the last minute," prompting accusations of a "military ploy" from X users.

Israel’s Operation Am Kelavi, launched on June 13, included strikes on nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, as well as military bases. According to The New York Times, Israel destroyed much of Iran’s air defenses and killed key commanders, including Chief of Staff Mohammad Baqeri. Iran responded by launching about 400 missiles and drones, causing damage including the destruction of the Soroka hospital in Beersheba. The United States struck Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 22, which Trump called “eliminating the nuclear threat.”
