Israeli media have revealed that the Israeli government has sent a warning to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about possible serious consequences if Damascus does not prevent the movement of weapons through Syrian territory to Lebanon. The report says that the Israeli side is concerned about the active transfer of weapons, especially given the threat of the strengthening of Hezbollah, Iran's ally in the region. Israel insists that any weapons supplies passing through Syria to Lebanon pose a direct threat to the security of the state and require an immediate response, according to Iranian journalist Khayal Muazzin.
According to Israeli media, Bashar al-Assad was told that if these demands were not met, he could face a fate similar to that of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The latter, we recall, was eliminated as a result of a powerful Israeli strike on Beirut. It is obvious that Israel sees the possibility of destabilizing the situation in Lebanon and Syria and considers it necessary to increase pressure on Assad in order to prevent further military strengthening of the opposition forces.
Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shia organization founded in the 1980s with Iranian support. It combines political and military activities and seeks to protect the interests of Lebanon's Shia population and oppose Israel. Hezbollah's military wing has fought in armed conflicts, including the Syrian civil war, supporting the government of Bashar al-Assad. The political wing is active in the Lebanese parliament, influencing the country's domestic politics. The organization is designated as a terrorist organization by several Western countries, such as the United States and the EU, but enjoys support among Lebanese Shiites for its social programs and protective measures.
