The Israeli Air Force carried out a targeted attack on strategic targets in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, hitting drone depots and naval infrastructure, including Iran's newest intelligence ship, the Zagros. According to local sources, powerful explosions were heard in the port area and the glow of fires was seen over the city. Iranian media reported damage to several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vessels, but other sources say an Iranian ship was destroyed. The Israeli side said the operation targeted weapons depots and drones, which they said were being used to prepare attacks against Tel Aviv.
Unveiled by Iran in early 2025, Zagros was the first electronic intelligence (SIGINT) vessel to be entirely designed and built locally. Its creation marked a major step in the development of Iran’s defense industry, demonstrating Tehran’s ability to produce sophisticated military technology. Based on the hull of a Mowj-class frigate, the vessel is equipped with advanced systems for intercepting and analyzing radio signals, as well as cyber warfare capabilities. Experts note that Zagros is capable of collecting data on adversary maritime activity, making it an important element of Iran’s strategy to strengthen its control over the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The ship’s helipad and hangar expand its operational capabilities, allowing it to conduct long-term missions and provide logistical support.
The attack on Bandar Abbas was the latest episode in the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, which escalated after Israeli strikes on sites related to Tehran’s nuclear program in June 2025. Iran responded with a series of missile attacks, causing casualties and damage on both sides. The strike on the Zagros and the naval base underscores Israel’s intention to weaken Iran’s military capabilities, especially in the area of high-tech weapons. According to analysts, the destruction or damage of such a ship could significantly limit Tehran’s ability to gather intelligence in the region, where key energy transportation routes are concentrated.
The strike on the port, located near the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes, increases risks for the global economy.
Iranian authorities have announced their intention to retaliate, accusing Israel of attempting to undermine the country's national security. The IRGC spokesman stressed that Tehran has sufficient resources to protect its interests and will continue to strengthen its military potential. In Bandar Abbas, the evacuation of civilians from areas adjacent to the port has begun, and air defense forces have been put on high alert.
