On June 24, 2025, three hours after the ceasefire between Israel and Iran announced by US President Donald Trump went into effect, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) detected new rocket launches from Iranian territory. The IDF Spokesperson's Office reported this on Telegram, specifying that air defense systems were activated to intercept the threats. According to Reuters, the launches occurred at around 10:00 a.m. Israel time, which was a clear violation of the ceasefire, which went into effect at 7:00 a.m.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he had ordered the IDF to carry out "massive strikes against military targets in Tehran" in response to the "flagrant violation of the ceasefire." Katz said Iran's attack confirmed the need to continue the operation against "a regime that threatens Israel's security." Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wrote on X: "Tehran will tremble," hinting at a tough response.
Iranian state media, including Mehr News Agency, denied that there were any missile launches after 7:30 a.m. local time, claiming that the latest strikes were carried out before the ceasefire deadline. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had previously said in a post on X that “there is no ceasefire agreement” but that Iran was ready to stop the attacks if Israel stopped its aggression by 4 a.m. Tehran time. Araqchi also thanked the Iranian military for striking “until the last minute.”
On social media, users are posting videos of what appear to be Israeli air defense systems, including the Iron Dome, intercepting rockets over Tel Aviv and Haifa. There are no official figures yet on any hits or casualties in Israel, but the IDF has called on citizens to stay in shelters. On X, some users are accusing Iran of sabotaging the ceasefire, while others believe Israel provoked the attack by continuing strikes until the last minute.
