A major internet cable between Sweden and Finland has been severed, causing significant disruption to communications in Finland. According to Swedish public broadcaster SVT, the incident occurred on Finnish territory and there is a suspicion that the break may have been intentional. Authorities in both countries are seriously considering the possibility of sabotage, and Finnish police have already launched an investigation into the matter.
The Swedish Post and Telecommunications Agency (PTS) said two cable faults had been detected in Finland. According to PTS, the faults were in cables belonging to Global Connect, which is currently working on fixing them. Niklas Ekström, the company's communications manager, said one of the faults occurred in Espoo and the other in Vihti. He said the second fault has already been fixed, while the first fault is still being repaired.
The cable damage affected about 6000 households in Finland, as well as hundreds of business customers, who were temporarily without internet access. The Swedish side was not affected. Ekström noted that the cause of the damage is still unclear, which further increases suspicions of possible sabotage.
Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin told Aftonbladet that Finnish police are investigating and there is reason to believe that the cable may have been broken intentionally. Finnish Transport and Communications Minister Lulu Ranne also commented on the situation, stating on the social network X that the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident together with the company Global Connect.
"We take the situation seriously," — Ranne emphasized.
Global Connect said its networks experienced "isolated outages" that affected fiber optic lines in two different locations. The company said the fiber outages were not related to submarine cables, but were caused by problems on the land side of the network. Both issues are currently being fixed, but some users are still experiencing outages.
According to Swedish radio Ekot, police suspect that sabotage took place.
