German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed the opinion that Russia is behind recent drone sightings over airports and military installations in Germany and other European countries. He made this statement in an interview, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of these incidents, which, he said, exceed even the frequency of events during the Cold War. Merz noted that although none of the observed drones were armed, they are likely performing reconnaissance missions against NATO infrastructure.
According to Merz, such actions represent a deliberate provocation aimed at testing the alliance's defensive capabilities.
However, preliminary investigations in European countries, including Denmark and Norway, have found no direct connection to Russia. Authorities in these countries point to the possible involvement of "professional actors" but emphasize the lack of evidence of Moscow's involvement. Despite this, European leaders are discussing strengthening airspace protection measures, including the creation of a "drone wall" to detect and neutralize threats.
It should be noted that the Russian side categorically denies the accusations.
