A UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo plane, en route to Honolulu, crashed on the evening of November 4 shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali Airport in Louisville, Kentucky. According to preliminary reports, the left engine detonated at an altitude of approximately 50 meters.
The plane crashed into an industrial area, including a fuel processing facility, a service station, and hundreds of parked cars. It was carrying over 38 gallons (143 liters) of kerosene, causing a massive fire and thick black smoke.
"The plane climbed 175 feet and then descended sharply," Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said.
Initially, three casualties were confirmed—the entire crew. By morning, the death toll had risen to seven, including ground crew members. Another 11 people were hospitalized with severe burns. "We are continuing to clear the rubble—the death toll could rise," Beshear warned at a press conference.
The airport is closed, and the NTSB has launched an investigation. The plane had been in UPS service for 34 years.
