Russia does not intend to suspend military actions in Ukraine without reaching a final and comprehensive peace agreement. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to Great Britain Andrei Kelin in an interview with the American publication The Wall Street Journal. Commenting on the US proposal for a temporary ceasefire for 30 days, the diplomat emphasized that Moscow views such initiatives with caution, given the negative experience of previous negotiations.
According to Kelin, Russia is ready to discuss any proposals, but the key condition for stopping the fighting remains the existence of a legally binding peace treaty that would suit all parties. At that time, according to the diplomat, Moscow and Kyiv drafted a peace agreement, and Russia withdrew troops from the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions as a gesture of goodwill. However, according to him, the Ukrainian side subsequently refused to sign the document, which, according to Kelin, undermined trust in such initiatives.
The ambassador's statement came amid intensified diplomatic efforts associated with the coming to power of the Donald Trump administration in the United States, who during the election campaign repeatedly promised to end the conflict as soon as possible. As reported by Reuters, in early March 2025, American representatives held a series of consultations with partners in Europe and the Middle East to develop a framework for a possible agreement. In particular, a meeting was held in Saudi Arabia with the participation of US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and representatives of the Ukrainian authorities, including the head of the presidential office Andriy Yermak.
However, according to Bloomberg, the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire put forward by the American side has not found support in Moscow. The Russian authorities insist on securing the current territorial realities, including recognition of Crimea, Donbass and other regions as part of the Russian Federation, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. At the same time, the Ukrainian leadership, supported by a number of European allies, rejects any concessions, demanding the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of control over all territories within the 1991 borders.
