China denies information about 155 citizens taking part in military actions for Russia

On April 9, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing knew nothing about the 155 Chinese citizens Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed were fighting on Russia's side against Ukraine. At a briefing in Beijing, Jian responded to a reporter's question by saying he had "no information to share" on the matter. He also emphasized China's unwavering position on the Ukrainian conflict, calling it "objective and fair" and aimed at promoting a ceasefire and peace talks.

"We seek to promote de-escalation and create conditions for dialogue. Our position is clear and understandable to the international community," "Lin Jian added, stressing that China remains committed to neutrality.

The statement came in response to recent comments by Zelensky, who on April 8 reported the capture of two Chinese citizens allegedly fighting alongside Russian units in the Donbass, and suggested that the total number of such mercenaries could be as high as 155. The allegations have heightened tensions between Beijing and Kiev and raised concerns in the West, which has long suspected China of covertly supporting Russia.
