China is rapidly expanding its capabilities for large-scale amphibious operations, raising concerns in the international community that it may be preparing to invade Taiwan. Industry publication Naval News has published data based on satellite images showing the construction of at least five giant landing barges on China’s east coast, opposite Taiwan. These vessels, according to experts, are designed to transport significant amounts of armored vehicles and troops directly to Taiwanese roads, which could significantly change the balance of power in the region.

According to an analysis by Naval News, each barge takes just a few months to build, highlighting the speed and scale of the work. The vessels feature extended bridges of around 120 metres in length, allowing them to cross coastal strips and reach hard surfaces such as roads, bypassing fortified beaches. This technical solution is reminiscent of the temporary Mulberry ports used by the Allies during the Normandy landings in 1944, suggesting preparations for a major military operation. Analysts note that such barges are significantly larger than any comparable civilian vessels, making it unlikely that they will be used for peaceful purposes, despite possible claims by Chinese authorities.

Chinese state media, meanwhile, have published models of the floating bridges being deployed, fueling concerns about Beijing’s true intentions. Experts point out that the construction of such vessels is one of the key indicators that defense analysts watch to predict a possible invasion. Taiwan has a limited number of beaches suitable for landing, all of which are heavily fortified, making the development of new amphibious assets an important part of China’s long-term military strategy. To successfully seize the island, experts estimate that China would need to deploy around two million troops, underscoring the scale of the potential operation.

Against this backdrop, Taiwan has seen a significant increase in Chinese military activity near its borders since early March 2025. According to Taiwan's Ministry of Defense, 11 PLA aircraft and nine ships have approached the island in the past two weeks, marking one of the most intense episodes in recent months. In addition, photos of a new landing ship have appeared on Chinese social media, which experts believe could be used for an invasion.
