According to Yonhap News, the armed forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) may be preparing to carry out demolition work on strategic roads leading to the border with South Korea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea said.
According to the South Korean military, the Korean People's Army (KPA) began active work along the Kyongison and Donghae lines on October 9. These roads run along the western and eastern coasts of the Korean Peninsula and connect the strategically important settlements of Kaesong and Paju, as well as areas near the coast of the Sea of Japan.
South Korean officials believe the moves could be in preparation for a possible blockade or troop deployment in the event of an escalation of tensions on the peninsula. They say they have seen increased activity by North Korean engineering units in these areas, suggesting preparations to blow up roads to create barriers in the event of a possible conflict.
Tensions between North and South Korea have escalated following recent statements from Pyongyang. On October 9, the Korean People's Army issued a strong statement accusing Seoul of violating North Korean sovereignty and threatening retaliatory measures. In particular, Pyongyang said that any border violations or provocative actions by South Korea would be dealt with "resolutely and harshly."
