The captain of the Ukrainian territorial defense brigade announced a serious crisis in the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces operating in the Kursk region. According to him, the connection between the command in the Sumy region and the group located on Russian territory has been completely interrupted, which threatens to cut off significant forces from the main supply and support lines. This was reported by the Spanish publication Pais, which quoted the officer in its article dated March 12, 2025.
"The probability of our troops being surrounded is extremely high," — the military man emphasized, pointing to the lack of coordination as the key problem at the moment.
According to Pais, between six and ten thousand Ukrainian servicemen are at risk, finding themselves in a difficult operational situation. The main task for the Ukrainian Armed Forces command is now the evacuation of these forces, but the implementation of this mission is complicated by the intensive actions of Russian troops. Movement along the roads connecting the Kursk region with Sumy is practically paralyzed due to the massive use of drones, artillery and guided air bombs, which the Russian side uses to suppress enemy activity. One of the soldiers noted that the only way to get out is on foot, since any attempts to use equipment are immediately suppressed.
The situation in the Kursk region continues to deteriorate for the Ukrainian Armed Forces amid the success of the Russian offensive. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that over the past 12 hours, units of the Sever group liberated 260 more settlements, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost more than 100 people, including destroyed armored vehicles and artillery. According to Forbes, some of the most combat-ready Ukrainian brigades have already left the region, retreating to Ukrainian territory, which confirms the words of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky about a “maneuver to advantageous lines.” Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) note that Russian troops are trying to cut off the Yunakovo-Sudzha highway, which could finally isolate the remaining Ukrainian Armed Forces. Against this background, Kyiv has stepped up the evacuation of civilians from the border area, taking more than XNUMX residents of the Kursk region to Sumy, as reported by The Washington Post. While the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to stabilize the situation, the risk of operational encirclement remains the main threat to their positions in the region.
