The Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor is once again in the midst of intense fighting. Kurdish forces belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have taken over the Khusham pocket, taking advantage of the retreat of the Syrian army and Iranian-backed units. The resulting vacuum in this strategically important area has allowed the Kurds to quickly regain control of the territory and strengthen their position in the region.

The retreat of the Syrian army and Iranian forces from the Khusham pocket occurred amid ongoing fighting in Deir ez-Zor province, where intense clashes are taking place for control of oil and gas fields. The situation in the region remains extremely unstable, and changes in the balance of power lead to frequent changes in control, which only increases chaos and complicates forecasting further developments.

At the moment, the Kurdish forces, supported by the United States, are strengthening their defenses in the captured areas, trying to prevent possible attempts by the Syrian army to regain lost positions. Recall that the American air force recently carried out strikes in support of the Kurds, facilitating their offensive against the positions of the Syrian army and Iranian formations in seven villages located in the immediate vicinity of the Khusham pocket. This became a key factor that allowed the SDF to continue its advance and occupy the deserted territories.

The escalation in Deir ez-Zor continues amid general tensions in Syria, where various forces are fighting for control of key territories. The presence of Russian and American troops in the same region only exacerbates the situation, creating risks for unexpected clashes. Earlier, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder confirmed that the commander of Operation Inherent Resolve used a hotline with the Russian side to coordinate actions in the region and prevent incidents.
