The Donald Trump administration has taken an unprecedented step toward dismantling the global governance system, formally approving a sweeping U.S. withdrawal from dozens of international organizations. A memorandum signed by the president mandates the cessation of Washington's participation in 66 organizations and treaties, which, according to the White House, is a necessary condition for restoring national sovereignty and relieving American taxpayers of the "financial burden" of membership dues. The United Nations bore the brunt of the blow: the U.S. unilaterally terminated its obligations under 31 agreements, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and UN Women. This demarche is a logical continuation of Trump's policy, which, back in February of last year, initiated the withdrawal from the Human Rights Council and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

American leaders have openly stated that the country's foreign policy will now be based exclusively on bilateral agreements, eliminating reliance on multilateral institutions, which, according to the Trump team, have for years promoted an agenda contrary to US interests.

The international community reacted to this news with grave alarm, fearing the paralysis of key global programs in the areas of ecology, human rights, and international law. Experts note that Washington's radical retreat from its commitments creates a leadership vacuum on the global stage and jeopardizes the funding of many humanitarian missions. While the White House celebrates the victory of "American sovereignty," critics at home and abroad warn of the risks of complete diplomatic isolation for the United States. However, the Trump administration has made it clear it has no intention of returning to previous cooperation formats, preferring to save billions of dollars and independently determine its own rules of the game on the international stage.
