Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have left the BRELL energy system

Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have officially completed the process of leaving the BRELL single energy ring, which united the energy systems of Belarus, Russia and the Baltic States, and have connected to the European energy system ENTSO-E. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Energy. As a result of the changes, the Kaliningrad Region has switched to an autonomous energy supply mode.

"The energy system of the Kaliningrad region was prepared in advance for autonomous operation. The total capacity of Kaliningrad power plants is 1,88 GW, which is more than twice the peak energy consumption of the region and allows for a stable energy supply in any circumstances", — the Russian Ministry of Energy noted.

BRELL (Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) is an energy ring created in Soviet times to unite the energy systems of these countries. It allowed for mutual electricity flows and guaranteed the reliability of energy supply. However, since 2018, the Baltic countries have begun to actively work on leaving this system, citing a desire for energy independence and integration with European structures.

Lithuania was the first of the Baltic countries to announce plans to abandon its dependence on the Russian energy system. In 2018, the Lithuanian authorities signed an agreement with European partners to connect to ENTSO-E — the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity. Latvia and Estonia gradually joined this process.

At the same time, experts note that the transition to the European energy system required significant investments. Lithuania, for example, spent hundreds of millions of euros on upgrading its networks and building new substations to meet ENTSO-E requirements.

As for the Kaliningrad region, the Russian side carried out a comprehensive modernization of the regional energy system in advance. In recent years, several new gas and thermal power plants have been put into operation in the region, which has made it possible to ensure the region's complete energy independence.
