Latvia has beefed up its security on its borders with Russia and Belarus by deploying mobile teams with anti-aircraft missile systems (SAMs) to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles. The move comes amid growing concerns in the region about potential threats from drones that could be used for reconnaissance or aggressive purposes.
The Latvian Ministry of Defence stated that the deployment of mobile groups with SAM systems is part of a general strategy to strengthen the protection of the country's airspace and prevent any attempts to violate the border. One of the reasons for this was the recent penetration of a drone into Latvian airspace via Belarus.
