On Tuesday, May 20, 2026, an air raid alert was issued in Lithuania following the sighting of a Ukrainian drone. According to the Lithuanian news outlet LRT, the country's political leadership was urgently evacuated to a shelter. President Gitanas Nausėda and Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė were escorted to safety, and the evacuation order was also given in the Seimas building, after which members of parliament and staff descended to the basement.
The Commander of the Lithuanian Army's Ground Forces, Brigadier General Nerijus Stankevičius, told reporters that Lithuanian troops were warned about the approaching drone by Belarusian servicemen.
"This morning, we received a message from the Belarusian armed forces about the possible movement of drones into Lithuanian territory. Our Latvian neighbors received similar information." — Stankevičius said.
NATO air policing forces were deployed to intercept the drone. Two fighter jets took off from Ämari Air Base in Estonia, tasked with detecting, visually identifying, and destroying the drone. However, according to Stankevičius, "the operation ended with no enemy aircraft being detected in the air." The air policing fighters aborted the mission and returned to Estonia.
