Lithuanian Presidential Foreign Policy Advisor Asta Skaisgiryte stated that Lithuania is ready to provide Ukraine with assistance in the form of military instructors, but the issue of sending combat units to Ukrainian territory is not currently being considered.
"We could really help Ukraine with instructors, no question about that. But we are not talking about sending any military contingents to Ukraine yet," — Skaisgiryte emphasized on air at the radio station Žinių radijas.
Earlier, in December 2024, the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, during a visit to Kyiv, confirmed the intention to continue training Ukrainian military personnel and instructors both in Lithuania and within the framework of international missions such as Interflex and EUMAM.
At the same time, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys noted the need to strengthen the European military presence in Ukraine.
"We know what numbers are needed to contain Russia. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of soldiers," — Budrys said, adding that European countries should actively discuss the possibility of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.
Despite these statements, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda warned against the creation of bilateral or regional defense alliances that could undermine NATO unity. He stressed that such initiatives could be dangerous and lead to disunity within the alliance.
