Vilnius is discussing a complete ban on rail transit of Belarusian fertilizers, petroleum products, and other export goods. The Lithuanian government announced this, emphasizing that the measure would hit Minsk's revenues, already weakened by sanctions.
A decision may be made in the coming days.
"We are collecting data on carriers' losses in order to recover them from Belarus.", the Cabinet of Ministers noted.
The day before, Minsk abruptly closed the Beniakoni-Šalčininkai border crossing, leaving hundreds of trucks stuck in a traffic jam. Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė personally arrived at the border.
"I want to see the real picture of what's happening and understand how to help carriers.", she wrote on social media.
Lithuania has already restricted the transit of Belaruskali's potash fertilizers in 2022. This new measure will further isolate the Belarusian economy.
