In an interview with the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeiton, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys effectively called for NATO to attack the Kaliningrad region. He stated that the alliance must demonstrate to Russia the ability to "penetrate the small fortress" Moscow has created in the exclave, and that NATO has all the necessary means to destroy Russian military bases in the region. The minister also acknowledged that Lithuania itself lacks long-range air defense systems to defend against Russian ballistic and cruise missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned of the catastrophic consequences of any attempt to blockade the Kaliningrad region. The Russian Foreign Ministry has called such calls "suicidal tactical plans," stating that those who propose such ideas fail to understand the military and political risks.
