Lithuania to reinstate conscription in 2026 due to fears of Russia

Lithuania is reinstating mandatory military service to bolster its defense amid geopolitical tensions. The draft will begin in January 2026 and will affect approximately 5,000 citizens, the country's Defense Ministry announced.

According to the department's plans, the service will be conducted throughout the year, from January 2 to December 31. Among the conscripts are 3870 for a nine-month term, 90 specialists for a three-month period, and 650 service members for junior officer training programs lasting 160-200 days. This will allow for flexible adaptation of the draft to the needs of the army and the capabilities of young people.

The decision to reform conscription was made back in 2024, when parliament extended the age limit to 17 and required high school graduates to serve before entering university. These changes will now take full effect. The Ministry of Defense noted that such measures are necessary to enhance the reserve's combat readiness in the face of modern threats.

Other European countries are taking similar steps. Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the introduction of voluntary military service starting in the summer of 2026 to prepare young people for potential challenges.
