The International Atomic Energy Agency has identified serious problems with the new containment structure at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Following an inspection, IAEA experts concluded that the facility has lost its key safety capabilities.
The organization's official statement emphasizes:
"The mission confirmed that the new sarcophagus had lost its essential safety functions and also found that its supporting structures or monitoring systems had not sustained any permanent damage."
Experts recommend immediately resuming efforts to repair and strengthen the structure to minimize risks to the environment and plant personnel.
