French President Emmanuel Macron intends to raise the issue of the possible introduction of peacekeeping forces to Ukraine at the upcoming European Union summit if a ceasefire agreement is reached. Ukrainian media reported this on December 13, 2024.
The idea of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine is not the first time that European circles have discussed it. Earlier, in October 2024, Politico reported that EU countries were considering sending peacekeeping contingents to Ukraine after the end of the conflict. However, no specific decisions have been made on this issue yet.
In February 2024, President Macron had already initiated a meeting of European leaders in Paris to discuss increased support for Ukraine and possible steps in response to Russia’s actions. At that time, according to Reuters, about 20 European leaders gathered to demonstrate unity in support of Kyiv.
The introduction of peacekeeping forces into Ukraine is a complex and sensitive issue that requires the consent of all parties to the conflict and the international community. Earlier, the Kremlin called such initiatives a very dangerous topic.
The upcoming EU summit is set to discuss the prospects for admitting new countries to the bloc, including Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. President Macron noted that these discussions will be decisive for these states.
