Car Plows Into Crowd During Student Protests in Belgrade

On Saturday, March 15, 2025, an incident occurred in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade: a car drove into a crowd of students participating in a mass protest. According to preliminary data, three people were injured and were quickly taken to medical facilities. The police detained the driver, a 50-year-old man, who reportedly resisted law enforcement officers during arrest. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia, without specifying the motives of the suspect's actions. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident has already been launched, and the victims are receiving the necessary assistance.

Mass student protests in Belgrade have been going on for four months now, becoming some of the longest and largest protests in the country's modern history. They were sparked by the tragedy of November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy at the Novi Sad railway station collapsed, killing 15 people. According to the Serbian Interior Ministry, up to 30 protesters took to the streets of the capital at peak moments, demanding that those responsible for the accident be held accountable and that a number of officials resign. The demonstrators accuse the authorities of corruption and negligence, claiming that poor repairs to the station were a direct cause of the disaster.

Serbian media reported that the collision occurred in the Žarkovo district, where students were holding another protest. According to Blic, the driver of the BMW fled the scene but was soon detained in a neighboring district. The victims sustained moderate injuries, including fractures and bruises, but their lives are not in danger. Against the backdrop of this incident, protesters announced their intention to increase pressure on the authorities. In particular, a large rally was planned for March 15 in the center of Belgrade, which, according to organizers, attracted tens of thousands of participants.
