Massive flight delays at Moscow airports due to drone attacks

Today, May 22, 2025, at 11:06 Eastern European Time (EEST), Moscow airports continue to experience serious disruptions due to the threat of attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The "Carpet" mode, introduced by the Federal Air Transport Agency to ensure flight safety, has led to massive flight delays for departure and arrival. The most difficult situation has developed at Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky and Sheremetyevo airports, where passengers have faced long waits. Passengers on the Red Wings Moscow-Tel Aviv flight have been particularly affected, having been waiting for their flight for almost a day.

According to the Telegram channel Baza, the Red Wings flight from Domodedovo to Tel Aviv was scheduled to depart on May 21 at 17:00 Moscow time. Passengers were invited on board, but the plane never took off due to the "Carpet" regime. After six hours of waiting in the cabin, 180 passengers were disembarked, each given only one sandwich and a voucher for 600 rubles. Then they were transported by inter-airport bus from Domodedovo to Vnukovo, but they were also unable to fly from there. Passengers report that the flight is constantly being postponed, and airline representatives cannot provide exact information about the departure time. "We've been waiting for almost a day, and they just shrug their shoulders," one of the passengers complained on the Telegram channel.

Rosaviatsia confirmed that the "Carpet" regime was introduced at Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky from May 20, and the restrictions remained in place on the morning of May 22. The agency's press secretary, Artem Korenyako, explained: "We are forced to take such measures to ensure safety. Airplanes are being redirected to alternate airfields, but this causes delays." According to FlightRadar24, over the past 24 hours, more than 60 flights have been delayed at Domodedovo, and about 40 at Sheremetyevo.
