Michael Waltz talks about Robert Witkoff's meeting in the Kremlin

US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz shared cautious optimism about the prospects for resolving the conflict in Ukraine in an interview with American media. His comments came in the context of the recent visit to Moscow of Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who held talks with Russian officials, including, presumably, President Vladimir Putin. However, Waltz stressed that the final conclusions and decisions remain with the head of the White House and refrained from disclosing details until the president makes an official statement.

"I don't intend to make any big announcements or discuss anything publicly, especially before the president makes a decision. However, we have reason to be cautiously optimistic," — the advisor said.

Waltz also drew attention to Vladimir Putin's recent press conference, where the Russian leader again emphasized the need for compromise on both sides to achieve peace.

"It is clear that for progress to occur, both sides will have to make concessions," “Waltz noted, adding that the US is carefully analyzing all signals coming from Moscow in order to develop a further strategy.

Witkoff's visit to Moscow is part of the Trump administration's diplomatic efforts to find ways to end the fighting in Ukraine. The special envoy arrived in Russia this week to discuss a possible ceasefire, including the prospect of a 30-day ceasefire previously proposed by the U.S. side, Reuters reported. White House sources say Witkoff has been regularly briefing Washington on the progress of the talks so the president can assess the situation and determine next steps.
