Germany News, December 10, 2025, Avia.pro. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized certain provisions of the Trump administration's National Security Strategy, calling them unacceptable for Europe. He made this statement during a visit to Mainz on December 9, commenting on the document released last week.
Merz expressed disagreement with the characterization of European democracy in the American plan, which presents the continent as needing salvation from internal threats.
"I don't see any need for the Americans to want to save democracy in Europe now; if it needed saving, we could handle it ourselves," - he stressed.
In his opinion, such assessments do not reflect the real state of affairs on the continent.
The Chancellor called for greater European independence in the security sphere, noting that the document confirms the need for greater independence from the United States.
"Some parts are understandable, some are explainable, and some are unacceptable to us from a European point of view," — Merz added.
He also expressed hope that shared goals of defending freedom and peace would be preserved, but warned of preparing for a scenario in which Washington would choose to act alone.
